Yameen Chestnut

Yameen Chestnut is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with thirteen years in the clinical room. He grew up in Washington, D.C. — shaped by its streets, its music, its particular closeness, and the night in June 1991 that changed the terms of everything that followed.

He has spent more than a decade working at the intersection of trauma, emotional inheritance, and the inner life — with individuals, couples, and clinicians in training. His practice is grounded in the conviction that the work of healing is not the removal of what happened, but the slow, deliberate building of the inner circle that makes carrying it possible.

Surrounded by Loved Ones is his third book.

The Book

The ease was already with the hardship

On a June night in 1991, Yameen Chestnut was sixteen years old and riding in a minivan on the streets of Washington, D.C. when the shooting happened. One of the boys in the van did not survive. Another boy — a friend named Vaughn — was there too. And in the aftermath, the two of them went in different directions, carrying what the night had cost them.

This book is what thirty years of living, losing, and learning to build the inner life has produced. It is a memoir and a framework — personal testimony woven together with the best of what neuroscience, psychology, and the author's clinical practice have taught him about how healing actually works.

"I did not acquire Compassion, Kindness, Grace, and Empathy from the outside. I discovered them inside a life that had given me every reason to believe they were absent. The ease was already with the hardship. I simply could not see it yet." — Yameen Chestnut, LMFT

The central argument is a preposition. Not after hardship — with it. The four companions at the heart of this book were not the reward for surviving. They were present inside the surviving itself, waiting to be named. This book is the naming.

The Framework

The Four Companions

The book introduces four inner companions — not practices to acquire but capacities already present, waiting to be recognized and developed. Each one is explored through memoir, clinical insight, and specific practices for building what the author calls the inner sanctuary.

Companion One

Compassion

The One Who Stays

Not the one who arrives in a moment of transformation. The one who is there in the morning when nothing has changed. Self-Compassion is the practice of turning toward your own experience with the same steadiness you would offer someone you love.

Companion Two

Kindness

The Friend Who Tells the Truth

Not softness. Not the avoidance of hard things. The kind of Kindness that tells you the truth because it believes you can handle it — that says, quietly and without drama: you do know you can do better.

Companion Three

Grace

The One Who Covers the Ground Where You Falter

The refusal to let what you have done become the final word about who you are. Grace is not the erasure of consequence. It is the insistence that failure is not identity — and that the ground under your feet is still solid enough to build on.

Companion Four

Empathy

The Listener

The practice of turning toward your own interior with curiosity rather than judgment. Inward Empathy is how the inner life becomes legible to itself — how you begin to know what you are carrying, and why, and what it needs.
